Thanks to our premier Rodney MacDonald for selling us out after we voted No in a provincial plebiscite on Sunday shopping. Statutory Holidays were also thrown out too. The public was not consulted as to whether or not to have stores open on Holidays. Rodney MacDonald has no right to make this decision for us. He had no right to decide whether stores should open on Sundays either, since we "VOTED NO". With Good Friday and Easter Sunday approaching, stores will be able to open in Nova Scotia, as there is no law to prevent them from doing so.
A big box store had all intentions of opening, but due to pressure from the public they have chosen to close.
Big Box store to close Good Friday & Easter Sunday.
I'm happy that they have chosen to close. But hey! Let's face it, if there had been laws in place, there wouldn't be a debate at all on this. Those who claim this is a religious debate, and I'm talking about those government workers, MLA's who take these days off, should be amongst the first to work. Hello!, If Good Friday & Easter Sunday or any Holiday is a normal day and retail is expected to work, why not you?
While waiting for the hotline with Rick Howe, I decided to tune into Maritime Morning with Andrew Kystal. Andrew was all for stores opening on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and from what he said it was all about a Christian Holiday. Then he went on to tell us that Maritime morning wouldn't be on Good Friday. Well I just had to call in and ask him why there wasn't a talk show on Good Friday since it was a religious Holiday? I didn't get much of a answer, but the public got my point. Point in being, if it is just another day ,why aren't you working? I then proceeded to go on the Hotline and let the viewers know how I felt about the whole mess. Darrell Dexter, leader of the NDP wants a law in place to prevent stores from opening up on Holidays. This confuses me, because when the Sunday shopping debate was in full swing he told us over and over that government doesn't have the right to tell business's when to open and when not to. So Darrell, why the flip flop? I'm happy with his stance on Holiday shopping, don't get me wrong. It's his opinion on the Sunday shopping issue that bothers us. Why oh why, must our opposition parties along with our government ignore a vote that should have been respected?
